Competition Rules and Rule Modifications

    Please contact the local angling authorities to check for any closures or restrictions on angling, especially in regards to fishing for spawning fish.

  • Notice to all team captains and competitors:
    Please ensure that neither you nor your team members and agent are fishing on the closed sections of the Clearwater and Similkameen Rivers! This is strictly forbidden!

    The Similkameen River is closed to fishing for all competitors and their agents from the highway bridge in Princeton for the entire length of the river down to the lower highway bridge that is 30 kilometers east of Princeton.

    The Clearwater River is closed to fishing for all competitors and their agents from the highway bridge to 3.5 kilometers upstream of the highway bridge.

  • Single fly only for all venues
  • All flies must be dressed on single, barbless hooks
  • Catch and Release for all venues
  • Fish must be kept in the water at all times
  • Competitors are not allowed to touch or handle their fish 
  • Eligible fish species: Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii), and Mountain Whitefish (Prosopium williamsoni)
  • Eligible fish on river sectors will not be measured for length, but will be scored as 500 points per fish
  • 20cm minimum size for all sectors
  • No aerializing fish (A.K.A. Butterflying)
  • Competitor controlled boat sessions
  • 3 hour sessions on all venues
  • Fishing on 2 River Beats with 15 minutes relocation time
  • Competitors must wear PFDs and eye protection for all lake and river sessions
  • Wearing studded wading boots and wet waders is forbidden on buses and in the competition hotel
  • The fishing of competition sectors by competitors with guides or their agents is prohibited during a period of sixty days prior to the official start of the event (all competition sectors are closed as of July 27, 2023)
  • All WFFC competition sectors for the Masters and Ladies World Fly Fishing Championships are closed to all of the WFFC teams 60 days prior to the event (see the “Guiding and Practice” webpage for more details).
