2023 MASTERS AND LADIES WORLD FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS BIO-SECURITY REQUIREMENTS

Important notice for all teams, competitors, and participants of the 2023 Masters and Ladies World Fly Fishing Championships:

Prior to travelling to Canada for the 2023 Masters and Ladies World Fly Fishing Championships, all fishing gear, nets, waders, boots, drogues, and other items that will come into contact with our waters are required to be checked, cleaned, and dried in accordance with the recommended guidelines, in order to prevent the introduction and spreading of didymo and other invasive species.

The following methods, developed and tested by New Zealand authorities (Biosecurity New Zealand), have proven effective in controlling the spread of didymo:

CHECK:

Before departing for Canada, check all of your fishing equipment carefully and remove all obvious clumps of algae and vegetation, taking care to look for hidden clumps.

CLEAN AND DRY ALL FISHING EQUIPMENT AND GEAR:

Before departing for Canada, clean and dry all of your fishing gear, nets, waders, boots, drogues, and other fishing equipment that have been in contact with water!

CLEANING NON-ABSORBENT ITEMS:

Soak and scrub all items for at least one minute in one of the following solutions:

– Very hot water kept above 60°C (hotter than most tap water), or for at least 20 minutes in hot water kept above 45°C (uncomfortable to touch).

– A 2% solution of bleach (200 ml and water added to make 10 litres);

– A 5% solution of salt (500 ml or 2 cups and water added to make 10 litres);

– A 5% solution of antiseptic hand cleaner (500 ml or 2 cups and water added to make 10 litres);

– A 10% solution of dishwashing liquid (1000 ml or 4 cups and water added to make 10 litres).

ABSORBENT ITEMS:

Absorbent items like felt-soled boots and waders require longer soaking times to allow thorough saturation. Leave your absorbent material to soak:

– At least 40 minutes in hot water kept above 45 °C;

– At least 30 minutes in hot water kept above 45 °C containing a 5% dishwashing

detergent solution.

FREEZING FISHING EQUIPMENT:

Freezing any fishing item until solid will also eliminate didymo cells.

DRY:

Completely dry your equipment if you cannot clean it adequately and then allow it to dry for an additional 48 hours before travelling to Canada. Drying will eliminate didymo cells, but slightly moist didymo cells can survive for months. Items must be completely dry to the touch, inside and outside, to ensure that cells are eliminated.

Thank you for your cooperation and consideration on this very important matter!
